If you didn’t know, today is World Mental Health Day 2024. Started in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization, World Mental Health Day is recognized every October 10.
This day serves as a reminder of the role we can each play in normalizing mental health issues. It also provides the perfect opportunity to recommit to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our children and adolescents.
Securly may be best known as a K-12 student safety and wellness technology provider. But first and foremost, we are allies who share a deep concern for and commitment to the mental health and wellness of all students.
On this World Mental Health Day 2024, we’re recommitting to being a supportive partner in your efforts to prioritize student mental health.
10 Practical, Low- or No-Cost Strategies for Creating a Supportive School Environment
We know that as K-12 administrators and educators consider how they can best support their students’ wellness, they may understandably feel the strain of limited resources. Mental health professionals are in short supply, and budgets may not accommodate all of the supports they’d ideally provide.
That doesn’t need to be a barrier to supporting students’ safety and wellbeing. Here are some effective, low- and no-cost strategies you can use to take a proactive approach to supporting student mental health.
1. Foster a culture of open communication
✅ Implement regular “check-in” sessions where students can express their feelings
✅ Create a “worry box” where students can anonymously share concerns
✅ Encourage peer support groups led by trained student mentors
2. Integrate mindfulness practices
✅ Start each day or class with a brief mindfulness exercise or guided breathing
✅ Designate quiet spaces in the school for reflection or decompression
✅ Introduce simple yoga or stretching breaks between lessons
3. Promote positive relationships
✅ Organize regular community-building activities that foster connection
✅ Encourage teachers to have informal, non-academic conversations with students
✅ Implement a “Mix It Up” lunch program where students eat with new peers to build connections across social groups
4. Foster student voice and choice
✅ Implement a student council or advisory board to involve students in school decision-making processes
✅ Create opportunities for students to lead projects or initiatives that address school or community issues they care about
✅ Establish a suggestion box or digital platform where students can share their ideas for improving the school environment
5. Utilize existing resources creatively
✅ Partner with local mental-health professionals to conduct pro-bono workshops or consultations
✅ Create a physical or digital resource library stocked with books, podcasts, and apps to teach mental health practices
✅ Leverage free online resources for mental health education and awareness
6. Empower teachers and staff
✅ Provide in-house training on recognizing signs of mental health issues
✅ Establish a teacher support network for sharing experiences and strategies
✅ Implement self-care practices for staff to model healthy behaviors for students
7. Engage families and the community
✅ Host fun family nights to encourage school-family partnership in supporting students’ mental health
✅ Create a family resource guide highlighting free and low-cost mental health resources
✅ Partner with local businesses or organizations on youth mental health initiatives
8. Recognize and reward positive behaviors
✅ Create a school-wide system to acknowledge and celebrate acts of kindness, empathy, and support
✅ Implement a “Caught Being Good” program where staff can recognize students for demonstrating acts of kindness
✅ Organize regular assemblies or events to highlight students who are making positive contributions to the school community
9. Develop a peer mentoring program
✅ Train older students to serve as mentors for younger students
✅ Create structured opportunities for mentor-mentee interactions, such as weekly check-ins or study sessions
✅ Provide ongoing support and supervision for peer mentors to ensure the program’s effectiveness
10. Cultivate life skills and resilience
✅ Teach stress management techniques, such as deep breathing or positive self-talk, that students can use in challenging situations
✅ Provide workshops on practical life skills like time management, study strategies, and goal-setting
✅ Create a “Growth Mindset” campaign, encouraging students to view challenges as chances to learning and develop
✅Implement a “Resilience Journal” program where students regularly reflect on how they’ve overcome obstacles
